This year is an upgrade year for me on my AT&T contract. I've been using a black 16GB iPhone 4S for two years. It's been a fantastic phone and hasn't given me any problems the entire time I've had it.
Even after updating the 4S to iOS 7 this last week, it still runs great and handles the new OS with ease. I could easily continue using the 4S and not buy the new phone, but what the hay, I am eligible for the subsidized upgrade this year.
I have a quote from Gazelle.com to sell them the 4S for $180. The total for the new 5s is $316.94 (with tax) which means once I receive the money from Gazelle.com, it will be as if I only paid $136.94 for it. That's not too bad considering I doubled the capacity of what I normally buy, from 16GB to 32GB.
When the original iPhone was released in June of 2007, I waited until February of 2008 before I bought one. Then when the 3GS came out, I stood in line at one of my local Apple Stores. I arrived there about 15 minutes before the store opened and there weren't too many people in line yet. It only took me about 10 minutes or so before I made it inside to make the purchase. Then, when the 4S was released, I stayed home and woke up early to pre-order online from Apple, but couldn't get into their servers and ended up getting into the AT&T site to place the order. I was happy to have FedEx deliver it to my door rather than stand in a line.
This time, I really wanted to see all three 5s colors in person before deciding which to purchase. I was interested in the gold or silver finishes and not so much of the space gray finish. Since I wasn't in a big hurry to have the new iPhone, I didn't feel like waking up at 3 am to try and order online. Instead, I went to my local AT&T store at 8 am when they opened to see what they had on hand. That worked out since it was on my way to work and it coincided with my normal travel time for leave home to go to work.
Unfortunately, AT&T didn't have any of the iPhone 5s's in stock. An employee told me that the owners of most of the AT&T stores in my state messed up their order with Apple and they only had one 5s on hand between all of their stores in the state. They did have a silver one on hand, but it was a display model only, and they did not have any other 5s finish's for display. I looked over the silver one and figured that looked good enough. The silver appears, to me, to be the most elegant and classy finish between the three available.
I went to work and by 9:49 am I placed the order at apple.com for the silver iPhone 5s, 32GB, AT&T. I was given a delivery date range of October 8th to the 11th. As of last evening, MacRumors reports that shipments of all the 5s models have slipped to an ambiguous date range of simply, "October." It seems, once again, that the iPhone is a big hit and selling out fast.
It also seems like the phone I wanted wasn't in stock or was in very short supply at the Apple Stores as well based on feedback I saw on the MacRumors forums. This year, I'm glad I ended up going about the purchase as I did. I'm not in a hurry to get it, so I didn't lose sleep by waking up at 3 am, and I didn't drive an hour, one way, to get to an Apple Store to wait in a long line only to be disappointed.
